UK-Iran Trade - Updated November 2007

Trade Statistics to July 2007

Direct UK exports to Iran in the seven months to July were £225.4 million, 11.8% down on the same period in 2006. Exports can be expected to be lower throughout 2007 than in 2006, which was lower than in 2005 – the high point in the last 5 years. This is a continuing indication of the effect of US and international sanctions on Iran’s trade with the UK. Iranian imports to the UK, at £38.1 million in the period, were down 17.8% compared with the same period in 2006.

It is worth remembering that, it is understood, that at least the same amount again of UK exports pass through Dubai to Iran as are shipped directly from the UK.

The leading sectors of UK exports to Iran, by value, so far this year are: power generation equipment, specialised industrial machinery, scientific control equipment, medicinal and pharmaceuticals and electrical appliances. Primarily Iran buys British engineering and manufacturing products but other important sectors are: metal ores and scrap, iron ores and steel and chemicals and chemical materials. The main categories of Iranian exports to the UK are: iron and steel products, vegetables and fruit, and textiles, yarn and fabrics.
